Understanding Kratom, 7-OH, and Dependence
Kratom comes from the leaves of a tropical tree and contains compounds that can affect opioid receptors in the brain. Some people use powder, capsules, teas, extracts, or concentrated products. 7-OH, or 7-hydroxymitragynine, is one of the active compounds associated with stronger opioid-like effects.
Not everyone who uses kratom becomes dependent. But regular use, high doses, extracts, and 7-OH products may increase the risk of tolerance, cravings, and withdrawal symptoms. Some people also use kratom to manage withdrawal from other opioids, and treatment may include opioid addiction treatment when that is part of the picture.
Dependence may look like needing kratom to get through the day, taking more than planned, feeling uncomfortable between doses, or continuing to use even after it starts affecting health, mood, finances, relationships, or daily responsibilities.
