Benzodiazepine Dependence

What are Benzodiazepines?

Benzodiazepines, often called ‘benzos,’ are a class of medications primarily used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and certain seizure disorders. These medications work by calming the brain and central nervous system, producing a relaxing effect. While benzodiazepines can be effective when used as prescribed and for short periods, they carry a high risk of dependence and tolerance, especially with prolonged use. Misuse or abrupt withdrawal from benzodiazepines can lead to serious health risks, including severe anxiety, tremors, and, in some cases, seizures. Understanding benzodiazepines and their effects is important for safe use and for knowing when to seek support if dependence develops.

What are examples of Benzos?

  • Alprazolam (Xanax)
  • Diazepam (Valium)
  • Lorazepam (Ativan)
  • Clonazepam (Klonopin)
  • Temazepam (Restoril)

Does it have negative side effects?

Yes, benzodiazepines can have negative side effects, especially with long-term use. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination, increasing fall risk. Over time, prolonged use may lead to cognitive issues like memory problems and emotional blunting, as well as physical dependence, requiring higher doses for the same effect. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe, including anxiety, insomnia, and, in rare cases, seizures. For these reasons, benzodiazepines should be used with careful medical supervision, especially over the long term.

What are the signs of Benzo addiction?

  • Increased tolerance, needing higher doses to achieve the same effect
  • Strong cravings for benzodiazepines
  • Memory problems and cognitive difficulties
  • Withdrawal symptoms when not using
  • Loss of control over use
  • Neglecting family, work, or school responsibilities
  • Continued use despite negative consequences
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms, which may include:

Tremors

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Sweats/chills

Seizures
